100% cotton blanket suited for year-round bedding.

How did the Vrou blanket come about?

In 2017, designer Lenore Schroeder delved into our vast archives of historic patterns and designs; a treasure chest for ideas and inspiration. She studied the checks of the classic Harris Tweed that was originally woven on the very Hattersley looms we use at Mungo today. She was equally fascinated by the three-dimensional effect of the waffle weave. The neat, pocket-like structure of this famous weave and the cross-sections of colour synonymous with the plaid check became the building blocks for the Vrou-Vrou throw blanket.

By experimenting with intersections of colour and increasing the scale of the well-known plaid check, Lenore turns a classic design into something intriguing, graphic and contemporary. Read more about the creation of the Vrou-Vrou (and the comedy of errors that took place during its production).

Is the Vrou Vrou a throw or a blanket?

First it was the Vrou Throw, because well, it rolls off the tongue. But there’s a problem, the Vrou is a blanket, not a throw. So is it the Vrou Throw blanket? The Vrou Throw or the Vrou-Vrou? Your guess is as good as ours, let’s see what sticks.

What’s in a name?

Originally called the ‘Vrou Throw’ after the Afrikaans word for lady. After a series of tongue-twisting mispronunciations and closer definition inspection we nicknamed it the Vrou-Vrou; a play on the phrase ‘frou frou’ meaning heavily ornamental and elaborate (adj.) or a rustling sound of fabric (n.).

Vrou-Vrou Facts

The Vrou-Vrou blanket is woven from Southern African grown cotton on our wide width Dornier looms at the new Mungo Mill in Plettenberg Bay.

The classic waffle weave has a cellular structure which gives the Vrou-Vrou a chunky body and texture. The pure cotton yarn ensures that it remains light and breathable, perfect for year round luxury.

Although called the Vrou Throw, it’s technically a full-sized blanket, made to cover a bed, but also great for an evening stroll or marking your spot by the lake.

Each Vrou-Vrou throw blanket is woven with 9 different coloured yarns. The warp features 5 colour variations and the weft features 4.

Review | My Beloved Mungo Vrou Vrou

I’m currently staying in an Airbnb in Sydney that is quite austere (that’s me being kind).

I sacrificed many prized pieces of clothing so that I could take my beloved with me and still stay within the baggage limit. I’m not sorry. I need to convey this – not only is this blanket keeping me warm (they only gave me a thin duvet cover that doesn’t cover the bed), it is the only thing keeping me sane and reminding me that I will get through this and adorn my soon to be found apartment with several Mungo comforts <3

Thank you for making beautiful things that bring us such joy.

  1. I will definitely purchase products from Mungo again!

I recently purchased Boma Cloth in a variety of colors and a king-size Vrou-Vrou blanket. I couldn’t be happier with the products and their packaging. The colors and fabrics are rich with so much depth. The Boma Cloth is a great size – larger than a typical kitchen or hand towel, so they can be used for a variety of purposes. The loop on one corner allows you to hook them wherever. I will definitely purchase products from Mungo again!
