The palette
The islands of the Caribbean are varied in their beauty. Some are coral, others volcanic. Some are exposed to the wild Atlantic coastline, others sheltered against the elements. To picture this unique archipelago is to draw to mind a patchwork of influences and a wave of colours – from the tropic seas, sun-bleached sands and warm, turquoise waters, each offering endless inspiration for colour.
But why the Caribbean?
It so goes that our founder and Master Weaver, Stu Holding, is not only an adept textiles craftsman, but a keen sailor too. And some time ago, many Mungo Moons ago one might say, he set sail on his boat, the Flying Shuttle, with his wife, Janet, and his two children, Tessa and Dax.
The idea was to see how far they could go. And how far they got was the Caribbean.
Where they took up residence for two months, and enjoyed the beauty of the tropics – crystal clear, warm waters, sunny skies… you get the picture.
It was from this influence, that he wove the first run of Caribbean Check Tablecloths.
Now, with a newly restored Saurer loom in our midst, we’ve brought back Stu’s original Caribbean Check design – giving it a refreshed spin in a set of island-inspired colourways.
The Caribbean Check is just the cloth to evoke that kind of sunshine-y, summertime-y feeling. It’s the kind that’s fitting for a lunch outdoors, an alfresco afternoon or an easy evening around the table. It’s that casually sophisticated, everyday elevated, feel-like-you’re-on-holiday kind of cloth.
