The Lisburn Linen range is inspired by antique French sacking material. The natural base colour is accentuated with a colourful stripe detail that runs the length of the table runner. In 19th century France, grain sacks were often hand woven and homespun out of a thick, durable fibre like linen or hemp. The addition of woven-in coloured stripes played a significant role – different colours represented the contents of the sack, whilst the stripe designs helped farmers identify their own grain sacks after the chaos of a market, ensuring the rightful owners transported their sacks back to the farm or mill.

Today the iconic vintage French grain sack has been repurposed in modern rustic country style decor (perhaps this might seem like an oxymoron, but that is how all movements start; building on, and adapting ideas from the past).

The Lisburn Linen Table Runner is woven at the Mungo Mill with a cotton weft and linen warp on our refurbished 1960s Ruti shuttle looms. One of the key characteristics that differentiates the vintage shuttle looms from more modern weaving machinery is their ability to weave a true selvedge (a self-finished edge that prevents the fabric from fraying or unraveling). We think the selvedge is an iconic feature on the Lisburn Linen range and have left it exposed on the table runner as an aesthetic detail.
