That’s a Wrap | Looking Back at 2024
2024 has been another year of growth and innovation for us at Mungo. This year, we showcased our bestsellers at Shoppe Object in New York, the Chelsea Flower Show in London, and Decorex in Johannesburg, enjoying the opportunity to connect with many more friends and followers around the world.
We also made a significant leap in our production capabilities with the addition of four new rapier looms – they truly are German engineering at its finest. These new machines not only enable us to explore more creative designs, but also stand a bridging piece at our Mill – where we showcase a history of weaving techniques and technology that spans over 150 years.
In line with our commitment to sustainability, our annual GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) audit was successfully completed, marking our fourth year as South Africa’s only GOTS-certified weaving mill. Earlier in the year, we were visited by a team who produced a short film on our mill and our GOTS certification – watch the film here.
In 2024, the front of our mill began its next evolution into an engaging museum space. Here you’ll find stories and artefacts that document the history of weaving, with a timeline that spans from prehistoric to present times. Our mill remains our testament to open and honest manufacturing. A place to connect product to process, and to observe the traditional craft of textile making first-hand – where you’ll find our full production – right from design, to warping, weaving, CMT, finishing, dispatch, retail, wholesale and marketing. If you’re ever travelling up the Garden Route, pay us a visit. Our doors are open daily for self-guided tours.
We welcomed new textile offerings to our range, including the Savannah Blanket – a first-ever multi-textural blanket, the hardy Grill Apron for those ready to handle the flames, a limited edition run of silk, mohair and bamboo wraps woven on our antique Hattersley loom, and a new run of GOTS-certified Organic Ruti Kikois. The Whalebone Throw, woven in soft cotton with a bold geometric design put a modern spin on our much-loved Bakuba Throw, and to our towel offering we introduced the Willow Beach in Sea Fan, and a new run of Changing Towels.
In 2024, we also continued our sponsorship of custom red and yellow Itawulis for the Plettenberg Bay lifeguards. Woven with the Itawuli’s iconic geometric design and updated with a palette to match the signature lifeguard uniforms, these towels are a gesture of gratitude to the team that ensures the safety of locals and holidaymakers throughout the summer season. Beyond safeguarding our shores, the Lifeguard Programme plays a significant role in community upliftment, training and upskilling youth from disadvantaged backgrounds with life-changing skills. Seeing these towels in action across 13 beaches in the Plett area is a powerful reminder of their dedication and impact.
2024 was also a busy year for our CSR, MOVE. Through our annual Swim Club, five days of early morning swims for a good cause, we raised over R150,000 – donated directly to I AM WATER Foundation, Nature’s Valley Trust and Cultural Connections in support of nature conservation and community upliftment. We introduced our 2025 Kids of Kurland Kikoi – a feel-good purchase that looks good too. ‘Galaxy’ was designed by Jeslynn Windvogel of The Crags Primary School, and the full proceeds will go directly back to her school to fund a much-needed additional teacher. Donations throughout the year were also made to Adopt a Swimmer, the Green Hearts, the Courage Club, RAP, PAWS, Moody Pooches, and New Beginnings – supporting community upliftment, skill development, animal welfare, food parcel donations, and more. We ended off the year with a Christmas stocking drive – with funds raised going towards gifts packed full of essential items for the children of the Kranshoek community.
And from our journal? Our featured story with Karen Dudley, ‘Such is Love’ marked our most popular post from 2024.
Thank you for your continued support. Wishing you a prosperous holiday season and a well-deserved break!
