When a product comes to life in our design office, there are certain considerations – form must follow function…
Perhaps this is why the enduring waffle weave has made its way into many of our bath, bed and kitchen classics – a design that is as utilitarian as it is visually appealing.
What is a waffle weave?
The waffle is created by varying the lengths of the warp and weft floats around a centre. Once the fabric is taken off our looms, and washed, the floats contract into a unique waffle design.
The resulting textile is not only nice to look at, but functional – adding warmth, texture, durability and absorbency.
By increasing the surface area of the textile, the waffle weave makes for wonderful absorbency. The honeycomb pockets help to draw in moisture – a design feature that one ups the traditional terry cloth, which more or less pushes the moisture around as opposed to trapping it in…
When paired with a strong, quality yarn like cotton, the waffle weave creates a robust textile – one that’s sure to see you through the seasons, and provide durable wear for hard use.
You’ll find this sturdy weave in our cotton dishcloths – the ultimate kitchen-side companion to help you wash, dry or cook with abandon.
The pocket-like nooks of the waffle help to trap in warm air – giving the weave its cosy feel that lends itself to blankets and throws.
Cosy, cuddly, and textural, it’s therefore no wonder the waffle makes it mark with our best-selling, room-brightening Vrou Vrou Blanket.
Good looks matter. Tone, texture and palette are all considerations in the Mungo design office. With its visually interesting, textural finish and feel, the waffle weave creates a textile that’s as functional as it is beautiful.
Absorbency, longevity, texture and warmth – all of these features work together to create a textile of enduring appeal; finding their form in some of our most beloved products.
But we won’t waffle on…
